Meet the Managing Director

Adil Chowdhury joined National Bank PLC (NBPLC) as Managing Director on Monday, July 7, 2025. With more than 25 years of banking experience spanning domestic and international arenas—including leadership roles at Bank Asia PLC and The Bank of Nova Scotia—Mr. Chowdhury arrives with a strong mandate to reaffirm NBL’s financial stability and renew public trust.

A respected figure in Bangladesh’s banking community, Mr. Chowdhury is recognized for his high ethical standards, dedication to sustainable growth, and commitment to cultivating a balanced, employee-centric culture. He is a vocal advocate for performance-based recognition and accountability across all levels of an organization.

During his tenure as President & Managing Director at Bank Asia, Mr. Chowdhury oversaw record-breaking profitability, expansive digital banking initiatives, and significant corporate governance enhancements. By the end of 2022, the bank had become the second most profitable in Bangladesh—a testament to his effective leadership.

His international journey includes over 15 years with The Bank of Nova Scotia, where he served as a Director in Hong Kong and Singapore. There, he managed a US $9 billion funding portfolio and engaged deeply with central banks and sovereign institutions across the Asia-Pacific and MENA regions.

Mr. Chowdhury began his career with roles at Credit Agricole Indosuez and American Express Bank in Dhaka. He later established and led the Treasury Department at Scotiabank’s Dhaka branch, showcasing his trailblazing approach early in his career.

Academically, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (VLSI Design) from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, Canada. He also possesses multiple international certifications in financial market regulation and practices.

As he assumes command of the nation’s first private-sector bank fully owned by Bangladeshi nationals, Mr. Chowdhury brings a compelling vision: a modern, transparent, and resilient National Bank, anchored in innovation, governance, and people-driven excellence.
